Overview
With a passion for Kenya and an intimate knowledge of her wildlife, people and landscapes, Karisia Limited offers tailor-made journeys to this diverse and fascinating country. Specializing in walking safaris as well as ornithological and photographic trips, Karisia is equally comfortable leading safaris to Kenya's famous national parks and its beautiful coastline and these trips can compliment a walking safari perfectly. Besides guiding and outfitting, the team at Karisia are also booking agents, able to book entire holidays based on an ‘on the ground’ knowledge.
As biologists, photographers, and Kenyan-born naturalists, Karisia’s owners, James Christian and Kerry Glen, provide a safari experience that goes beyond the ordinary. Karisia’s motto: Adventure in Luxury. Karisia’s fly-camps are mobile and with the help of a trustworthy camel team they can get into country far from the beaten track - all the while, maintaining a lavish comfort.
Wildlife On walking safaris, guests see all kinds of big game ranging in size from a thundering Elephant matriarch to a dimunitive Dikdik. Northern Kenya is blessed with a rich array of wildlife with fascinating predators like the Leopard, Lion, Aardwolf, Striped Hyena and Wild Dog. Meanwhile, safaris to the Masai Mara and Kenya’s other renowned national parks allow visitors to witness some of Africa’s most captivating wildlife as well as the spectacular wildebeest migration. Karisia Limited is privileged to work in some of Kenya’s most unspoiled wild places, where one can hear and feel the natural rhythms of Africa and truly forget the modern world left behind.
Camping Despite the remote camps, the rugged country, and the spirit of adventure on every safari, Karisia makes no compromises when it comes to the luxury and comfort of its guests. A belief that adventure need not stand in the way of luxury means that camps are equipped with everything that a visitor might need in order to be comfortable. Tents are all made in the traditional safari style with green or tan canvas and enough room for a tall person to stand and move around in. Each tent is furnished with a large mattress on the floor and a table, chair and basin outside. The basin is filled with hot water in the evenings and mornings for washing hands and face. Behind each tent is a toilet and shower that is filled with hot water upon request.
Meals Meals are freshly prepared each day with local hand-chosen produce and meats and Karisia can cater to any need or dietary requirement. The chefs are all accomplished in many cuisines and they like nothing better than innovating and trying new dishes. All dishes are healthy, while also sustaining and emphasize the freshness and vitality of the local Kenyan produce and meats.
Philosophy At Karisia Limited, they work hard to please. They take individuals, their interests and their needs seriously, providing every guest with a comfortable, exciting and memorable trip. Simultaneously, Karisia is dedicated to conservation and improving the lives of the local people where they operate. They believe that the best conservation efforts depend on participation by local people and so they support the communities they operate in by employing all local people, training guides, cooks, drivers and camel handlers as well as buying all local products like rugs, mats, camels and beadwork.
Karisia Limited also runs a side business that buys, cleans and sells local honey from northern Kenya, in Nairobi. This allows local sellers of honey to reach a much bigger market than they could otherwise. Additionally, all Karisia’s visitors pay a conservation fee per person per night as well as a camping fee (these are included in the cost of their safaris) and this money goes directly to the local community ranches where they stay. One of the most important aspects of this work is that the local people can see that wildlife and a healthy environment are worth fostering.
